Printing at Home
If you are the type that likes to make their own
pizza or a watch a wall of paint dry then you have
found your niche. Printing digital photos at home is
only for the truly patient and determined.
I highly reccomend home delivery for pizza and
printing. Morning after has more
ideas on printing services. If however you are one
of those DIY's - then buy a printer that will do
exactly what you need in terms of size and
quality. Any printer that can do "fine art"
printing at high resolution will have expensive
inksets. The printers are essentially give-aways
because you will be spending and spending and
spending on inks. Truly.
Below are some suggestions for basic printers that
will suit most everyday digital photographer's needs:
Canon Pixma MP470
The Canon Pixma MP470 is a versatile, all-in-one
unit that scans, copies and prints. This unit also
lets you print directly from memory cards, digital
cameras, and camera phones, and you can even enhance
your images before you print by using the 1.8-inch
color LCD display.
It also works fast, printing a borderless 4-by-6-inch
photo in approximately 46 seconds. Super easy to use,
simply press the power button and you can begin
inputting commands immediately. The MP470 is a great
value at under $100. It has excellent text output,
very decent photo output and a useful scanner/copier.
Perfect as a home office workhorse-printer with photo
capabilities.
HP Photosmart D7460 Printer
The HP Photosmart D7460 is a versatile printer that offers a lot of great features at a decent price point. For under $150, you get a network-ready and wireless printer with a nifty touch screen that makes navigating menus super easy.
The six-color printing, with individual ink cartridges combined with optional HP Inkjet Automatic Two-sided Printing Accessory can save users money by reducing wasted ink and paper. You can also use it to connect and print directly from most storage devices. The Photosmart D7460 is a perfect for the everyday home user who wants a photo printer that can produce acceptable snapshots as well as fast text prints.
Epson Stylus Photo 1400
Consider this printer a top choice in its price
range for those that want lab-quality photos. The
color prints are sensational and you will notice a
high level of detail and fantastic vibrant accurate
colors.
Now that you are hooked, here is the bad news - each of the six ink cartridges will set you back about $20 and the volume you get on each ink varies widely. Expect to invest heavily in ink if you print a lot. While you should not mistake this printer for an office printer (as this it can be too slow for most text only documents) it is hard to pass up the opportunity to print up to 13 x 19 inch exhibition quality prints that are sure to impress even your local photo lab.
