Architects and realtors, take note: Zoom out with this lens and even small places can look the Taj Mahal.
Nikon Coolpix S600
Photo Gallery for Nikon Coolpix S600
You no longer have to choose between grandma and the dog. Everyone can fit in the frame when you take advantage of this camera’s wide-angle capability.
OVERVIEW
The Nikon Coolpix S600 offers the everyday user a
professional-quality lens that boasts an extra- wide
perspective without an extra-wide price point. It is
a notable standout for portraits and especially for
macro (close-up) photography—making it the perfect
camera for taking on a hike to photograph nature
scenes.
Is owning a Nikon compact digital camera like using Dom Perignon for cooking wine? Like most of us, when you hear Nikon, you probably think of a high-end professional camera. But how does the brand perform when it comes to a basic point and shoot like the Nikon Coolpix S600? Here’s my review of this cute ultra compact:
WHAT’S SPECIAL
Glass Nikkor lens with extra-wide
perspective. The lens in the S600 features
the same technology Nikon uses in many of its
well-regarded high-end lenses. Its 4X zoom (28–112mm)
gets wide enough so that you can easily fit all of
your loved ones in the frame and will especially
appeal to architects and realtors who want to make
that “charming” property look more like the Taj
Mahal.
Audio note recording. The S600
allows you to record a voice clip to attach to a
particular picture. The next time you play back the
picture, the audio note automatically plays with it.
This is particularly useful when photographing
events, such as open-bar office holiday parties,
where you may not remember all the details.
Extremely fast start-up time. This baby is ready for adventure in just 0.7 seconds after hitting the power button. But…it is important to understand the limitations of any technology; while the initial start-up time was truly fast, it was slow from shot to shot. We have come to expect things fast—what did we do before the microwave?—but there are very few point-and-shoots that are truly made for shooting action, this one included. The “active child” setting only works if your child has never consumed sugar or television. For the rest of us, promise your child a treat if s/he agrees to stay still.

ABOUT MY REVIEW
I found the 10-megapixel sensor captured very
crisp, sharp pictures with minimal blurring and good
detail. Skin tones appeared natural and colors were
vibrant.
My main criticism of the S600 is its somewhat
confusing and unintuitive menu interface. It takes
multiple steps of button pushing and scrolling to do
what only takes one step on most cameras. The upside
is that most of us will have little use for accessing
all these features; the camera works fine without
making changes to the default settings.
BOTTOM LINE
Loyal Nikon fans who want a digital camera for under $200 would do well to consider the Coolpix S600—for the cachet of a Nikon paired with the sensibility of a very capable point-and-shoot.
