Thanks to CASIO for understanding that when I want to make a video of Britney Spears shaving her head, I don’t have time to scroll through a bunch of menus. Just push the little red button on the back of the camera and you are recording!

OVERVIEW

Billed as the world’s smallest and thinnest 10.1 megapixel camera, the credit-card sized Casio Exilim EX-10 makes shooting video—and uploading it to YouTube—easier than easy. More to the point: with a camera this tiny, there’s no excuse for not taking it with you.

Finally a (digital) diet that really works! Here’s my review of the super-skinny Casio Exilim EX-S10.

SIZE MATTERS

When determining what size camera to purchase, the question to ask yourself is: What size will insure that I get the most use out of my camera?

If buying a snazzily packaged, super-small camera means you’ll have no qualms about carrying said camera around--but adding any more bulk results in your only taking the thing out for the lunar eclipse—well, you’ve got your answer. Cameras work best when you take them out and turn them on.

Of course, really small cameras, or sub-compacts, frequently cut corners on image quality or shutter delay so that they can stay miniature. Fortunately, the Casio Exilim EX-S10 makes fewer compromises than most.

WHAT'S SPECIAL

Besides its defining special feature—its credit-card size—consider the Casio Exilim EX-S10 for:

  • Video. The most exciting feature of this camera is the ease with which you can make a video. Simply push the little red button on the back of the camera and you are recording. The video and audio quality are refreshingly good and the file size works quite nicely for attaching to emails, uploading to an iPod, or adding to YouTube.

  • Soft flash. This menu item is great for close-up portraits so that your subject’s face does not get too washed out. Using this feature will cut down considerably on less-than-flattering “deer caught in the headlights” shots.

  • Face Detection. This option can cut down on soft-focus photos. This is especially important since the camera does not come with image stabilization technology; photos taken in low light or with the zoom can be blurry. However, to work properly, the Casio’s (and most other cameras’) face-detection feature requires a high-contrast lighting situation.

EASE OF USE AND QUALITY

  • Using the menu. Basic menu items can be easily accessed from a sidebar on the screen--although those of you with big hands or long nails may find it difficult to use the small buttons. If you want to get into any of the more customized menu items, you will need patience to wade through a laborious menu. While many of these customized functions will be exciting to photo enthusiasts, the everyday photographer will be satisfied using the default settings.

  • Image quality. In terms of color and exposure, the Casio Exilim EX-S10 produces images that are quite satisfactory for most snapshot-printing needs, and more than fine for posting on the web. The noise or grit in the photos will be noticeable as you switch the ISO to speeds above 200 or as you go into low-light situations.

  • Camera delay. The delay in capture and shot-to-shot time was somewhat slow, but many would consider this a small sacrifice, given the camera’s ultra-portability.

THE LOOK

  • A mere 15mm thin

  • Stunning 2.7-inch LCD screen

  • Sparkly finish

BOTTOM LINE

Light, lean, and a very decent performer in everyday applications, especially video.
