WHAT’S SPECIAL
Optical Image Stabilization.Canon
pioneered Optical Image Stabilization and their
experience pays off; even in low-light situations
your photos rarely look blurry.
Camera Orientation Detection. Canon was
using this handy feature, which flips the photo
horizontal or vertical based on how you are holding
the camera, long before Apple put it in the iPhone. I
love using it—and it makes me feel like there really
is a digital Elph inside.
Automatic Face Detection. Turn on your
camera, and this technology sets focus, exposure,
flash and white balance, allowing you to track your
subject’s face so you do not lose it even if s/he
moves around in the frame. (It can also be customized
if, say, you want to track more than one subject.)
This feature can be especially appealing to pet
owners and bounty hunters, but in practice worked
intermittently depending on the lighting
situation.
SETTINGS & MODES
The manual settings on the menu won’t let you set apertures and shutter speeds but do offer some control over flash settings, ISO, white balance, and exposure. Add to that a variety of scene modes, and a glimmer begins to shine in the horizon: professional-looking photos. Choose one of the nine scene modes (easily accessed by the function key on the thumb pad) to draw on a pre-programmed database that determines the best exposure based on lighting conditions typical to that particular mode. If you were a pro you would have spent countless hours training to do this manually. Now you can automatically set Macro mode, a Kids & Pets mode, or a new Sunset mode, among others, and the camera does the rest.

ABOUT MY REVIEW
I used the camera in a wide variety of conditions and the SD1100 consistently started up quickly, generating quality photos with good color, sharpness, and exposure. The indoor flash setting was fickle at times, but I was usually able to correct for this by moving the camera to a slightly different angle where the lighting was more even.
BOTTOM LINE
This extremely capable camera will appeal to most anyone who likes to keep it simple. Its ease of use, fashionable colors, and dependability make it a great choice for vacations, parties, and the everyday happenings of real life.

OVERVIEW
Canon’s SD1100 IS, the follow-up to the incredibly
popular SD 1000, is mild-mannered enough to get
proficient results right out of the box, but has the
powerful manual options and scene modes you need to
make your pictures as super as you want them to
be.
As a professional photographer, I can’t even walk to the fridge without someone asking me what I think of his or her Canon Digital Elph. Here’s my take on this recent addition to the line of snazzy and intuitive cameras:
